meet: johnny stuntz

I am very lucky to have my hair cut by my friend the amazingly talented and super cool johnny stuntz. He is truly the best hair cutter I know + is now working for nasty gal

Here is an interview johnny did with nasty gal:

you’ve worked with some pretty amazing clients over the years. Who have been some of your favorite to work with?

that’s impossible to answer, because I’ve loved everyone I worked with and all the experiences at the time. I loved doing hair for rockers in the ‘80s and ‘90s. I did iggy pop’s hair for a while, a lot of supermodels in the ‘90s, and I just finished working on a movie with sienna miller. she was really, really cool.

what about photographers? who are some of the coolest you’ve worked with?

terry richardson…and paul here at nasty gal. we have a great time together.

any crazy stories from shoots?

the ‘90s were crazy in new york, let’s just say that. It was a different time.

I always hear you talking about old school female rockers. what are you most inspired by?

looking at the past, taking a little bit of that, and constantly moving forward. I am like, obsessed with ‘70s cosmo, when francesco scavullo used to shoot them. I have a collection at home with patti hansen, gia and other amazing women on the cover. I also collect italian vogue from past to present, especially when steven meisel is involved.

so what’s your favorite era in fashion?

definitely the late ‘70s. I love punk rock glamour.

any hairstyles you had that you regret?

oh yeah, in the 80s. lots of them. I used to color my hair a different color every week. I had a mohawk at one point, but never a mullet.

you’ve worked with a lot of famous people on shoots. have you ever been star struck?

yes. the only time I’ve ever been star struck is when I met oprah, and I don’t even watch oprah! one of my clients, corinne bailey rae, went on her show and I got to go on stage and she introduced me to her. I was totally star struck.

what would your dream job be if you weren’t a hairstylist?

this is the only job I’ve ever had, so hair’s the only thing I know! I worked at a salon starting in high school. If I didn’t do this, god, I don’t know what I’d do…be a makeup artist? (laughs)

okay, so I have to ask, what’s your favorite hair product right now?

It totally depends on the hair, but I’m obsessed with KMS hair play dry wax. It’s perfect for getting big, sexy, messy hair.

you’ve been working with us for close to a year now. what’s the most fun you’ve had on a nasty gal shoot so far?

It’s super creative, and we’re all on the same wavelength. I love the shoot we’re working on today with hyoni. It’s very late ‘80s grunge, but with a futuristic edge. again, it’s all about taking elements from the past and constantly moving forward and evolving. I think that’s what fashion is. that’s what Nasty Gal is. a super hip girl that drums to her own beat.
